Exciting changes for Apex Magazine in 2018

by on Sep 25, 2017 in Blog | 1 comment

With 2017 winding down, it is time to cast our gaze to 2018. Apex Magazine has a bunch of fantastic news to share with you regarding its immediate future.

Beginning with the September issue, we’ve been working to expand and improve the publication. The first item on the list included enhancing the production values of our podcast. Our podcast producer is KT Bryski. She’s added host commentary prior to the narration of the story. KT also adds really cool audio effects that compliments the narration without intruding. Finally, she’s worked to add diversity to our list of narrators.

Our podcast is funded exclusively through our Patreon. I want to thank our backers. They make this important arm of the zine happen.

Secondly, we are adding a pair of regular columns that target dedicated readers. The first is the previously announced “Page Advice” column by Mallory O’Meara and Brea Grant (hosts of the Reading Glasses podcast). The second is a column series titled “Between the Lines” illuminating current trends, awards, controversies, and books by agents Laura Zats and Erik Hane (hosts of the Print Run podcast).

And now the big news.

We’re bringing Apex Magazine to print!

<holds for applause>

Here is how this will unfold.

Beginning with the January, 2018 double issue (#104), the issue’s content will be published in a 5.5″ x 8.5″ paperback edition using a POD service and made available for sale from Amazon (and it’s affiliates). The price will be $6 to $8 for a single issue, depending on the size of the content month-to-month. It will only be available for purchase as single issues from Amazon (and possibly Apex–TBD).

When will the print edition become available? About 1 week after the digital release (first Tuesday of each month) of each eBook edition.

What about subscriptions? Subscriptions will only be available as a Patreon backer reward level. There will be a $10 a month backer level (for domestic US backers) that will insure you receive the print version every month. A level will be created for international backers to account for the difference in shipping costs.

Subscriber copies will ship about 2 weeks after the digital release.

Will it have all the short fiction that’s in the digital edition? Yes.

And the nonfiction? Yes.

What about the incredible cover art? Yes. In fact, this was our top priority.

Our January issue is filled with double the stories. Right now, we have original work by Nisi Shawl, Delilah S. Dawson, Nick Mamatas, and Benjamín Naka-Hasebe Kingsley.

Interested? Fill out the form below and we’ll let you know when the print edition is a backer level on our Patreon.

We will be posting more information later in the week.
